The roof of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem has been restored by the company piacenti S.p.A. with lead from Röhr + Stolberg.
Since the 4th century, a church has stood over the grotto in Bethlehem where Jesus is believed to have been born. The dilapidated church roof was restored between September 2013 and January 2015 by piacenti S.p.A., an internationally renowned specialist for the conservation of historic artworks and heritages. A total of 80 tons of lead produced by Röhr + Stolberg was processed. In this case, they opted for the robust wooden coil technique, which withstands thermal and mechanical loads very well. Believers were able to celebrate the 2014 Midnight Mass with an intact roof over their heads. The church, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is once again protected from harmful moisture penetration thanks to its new lead roof.
